Spotlight on Broadmarsh Multi Storey Car Park

Galliford Try Building East Midlands was appointed by Nottingham City Council for the construction of the new Broadmarsh Car Park, Bus Station, Central Library and retail units as part of the Broadmarsh redevelopment programme. An impressive addition to the city’s landscape, Broadmarsh Car Park is a £44m scheme to help regenerate Nottingham’s Southern Gateway.

The development will modernise parking facilities and the bus station - allowing passengers to travel across the city, county, and country - and will create a modern and high-quality Central Library and new retail units. The project consists of:

  • new build multi-storey car park to accommodate 1,226 cars with dedicated accessible spaces, parent and child spaces, electric car charging spaces and a taxi drop-off zone
  • a modern fully fitted out bus station, including ticket/travel centre, public WCs, back-of-house staff welfare facilities, customer waiting facilities, public concourse and information systems
  • new build library
  • new build retail units.

Despite the challenges of 2020 the project is progressing well, and the successful works has led to Galliford Try Building East Midlands securing the additional public realm works to complete the scheme.

The works encompass the completion of all external paving and structural features adjacent to the new multistorey car park, currently in the latest phases of delivery, and will ensure access and egress to all pedestrian entrances are created.

The scheme will be delivered across Carrington Street, Middle Hill and Canal Street and will involve integrating our works with other being currently delivered by Thomas Bow and Nottingham City Council as they undertake further road re-configuration and public realm works in the area. The programme of works will run concurrently with the main car park works, but also extend the overall completion date of the project.

In its design, the scheme will use high quality granite paving and precast concrete features, together with a modern lighting scheme to further enhance and regenerate the Broadmarsh area of Nottingham city centre. Additional enhancements, such as soft landscaping areas in feature planters, will also be included.

The scheme presents some interesting logistical challenges, with the specified granite paving on a long lead as it is being imported from China and Vietnam to match the wider scheme.
