A Year at Maber: Innovation Driven by People, Results Driven by Sustainable Purpose

About Us

We bring creativity, expertise and rigor to all the spaces and places we design. We are committed to our mission of being “Great to work with, Great to work for".

From offices in Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham and London, our 70+ strong team deliver projects across the country.

What We Do

We deliver the consistently sustainable design of residential developments, high-tech manufacturing facilities and education projects amongst many other sectors and project types.

Some recent project highlights include the Jewry Wall Museum, where we transformed the Grade II Listed Vaughan College building into a new museum of national significance celebrating Roman Leicester. The Catherine Infant School, a 420-pupil school with design supporting neurodiverse pupils is also net zero carbon in operation. Both these projects have been shortlisted for a Procon Award.

The Beckingham Cadet Training Centre is an innovative, sustainability-centred low carbon training facility for the Army Reserves. Foundations made from recycled tyres support the timber-frame buildings, raising them above the medieval 'ridge and furrow' field markings that occupy the site. This approach eliminated the need for carbon-intensive materials such as concrete or steel. In addition, it will minimise end-of-life waste when the blocks are demolished, as timber, gabions, and tyres can be reused or recycled.

Our digital studio delivers visualisations, BIM services and information management, and have recently completed a £1bn acute hospital project in Birmingham. Our Landscape Architecture team supports our architectural projects, delivers bespoke landscape schemes for public and private sector clients and has specialisms in masterplanning and urban design.

Celebrating a Year of Employee Ownership

This year, we reached our one year anniversary as a 100% Employee Owned Business.

The transition to employee ownership is part of the practice’s ongoing commitment to social value and the inclusive involvement of all staff.

We have a Trust board that oversees company governance and bonus distributions, as well as an Employee Advisory Panel that involves staff in each office location. They capture the employees’ voice and help shape the practice’s approach to a range of issues from the office environment through to our leave policy.

Being 100% employee owned puts our people first and binds our practice together in a shared commitment to strive for excellence that is motivated by the same goal. Every person our clients and design teams encounter speaks and acts with the passion and commitment of a business owner; because they are.

We are B Corp!

We are proud to say that this year we became an officially Certified B Corporation! The certification considers how our business affects our workers, customers, communities and environment.

As a B Corp, we’re counted among businesses that are leading a global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. With our commitment to being, “Great to work with, Great to work for,” we felt it was a natural fit for us.

But this is just the beginning of our journey and the hard work doesn’t stop now. We will continue to create the best working environment and context for all involved, working inclusively and sustainably, while creating a lasting and positive impact.

Sharing our Gateway 2 Approval

The Building Safety Act has impacted the whole construction industry over the last year. New Gateway approvals are now required for High Risk Buildings (HRB) which are defined as residential buildings that are at least 18 meters high or have seven or more storeys.

One of our HRB projects, a new-build student accommodation project in Nottingham for Cassidy Group, became the first Gateway 2 approval in the country in just 24 weeks.

However, the wider industry has not been as successful and we are aware that many projects are struggling with difficulties surrounding the 2022 Building Safety Act. Progress for many projects has been halted due to being unable to achieve Gateway 2 approval.

Since we have developed a successful and proven toolkit approach to achieving Gateway approvals, maber have spread this expertise through social media posts, press articles and two events for our developer and contractor clients. Hosted in London and then Birmingham, these events have proved invaluable for those in attendance, and we have felt privileged to be able to promote our expertise. Called ‘Unlocking Gateway 2’, we showcased our journey through the process and highlighted how we can help unjam stalled projects and save developers time and money.
