Powering growth: Morson Praxis expands its Power Civils capability from Nottingham.

Multi-disciplinary design and engineering consultancy Morson Praxis (previously known as Waldeck Consulting) continues to strengthen its role in supporting the UK’s energy infrastructure as the energy network evolves to accommodate renewable generation, electrification and increased grid resilience, driving a growing demand for reliable and future-ready power infrastructure.

We provide engineering design for a range of critical electricity infrastructure, including high-voltage substations, transformers, grid connection assets, cable systems and protection and control equipment across both National Grid and private customer sites. These services also extend to renewable energy connections, including solar, wind and battery energy storage projects. Working closely with the wider Praxis design teams, the capability integrates with projects delivering grid connections for large energy users, including manufacturing facilities and data centres, supporting the growing demand for resilient and future ready power infrastructure.

Project Spotlight

Morson Praxis were appointed by Morrison Energy Services to support a transformer replacement and remediation scheme at a substation in Ashford, Kent. The team delivered civil and structural engineering design services as part of the works being undertaken under the National Grid Transformer Replacement Contract.

The project involved removing the existing T13B Peebles Converter Transformer from service and replacing it with a new Siemens Converter Transformer, supporting the continued reliability and resilience of the electricity transmission infrastructure.

Scope of Works:

Morson Praxis provided engineering design support across several key elements of the replacement works:

  • Transformer Replacement Support – Engineering design to facilitate the removal of the existing converter transformer and installation of the new unit.
  • Bund Wall Modifications – A section of the existing bund wall was temporarily removed to allow the new transformer to be skidded into position, before being reinstated following installation.
  • Cable Trough Remediation – Redundant cables were removed from the existing cable trough, which was subsequently filled with mass concrete to ensure long-term stability.
  • Bund Wall Repairs & Upgrades – Structural repairs were undertaken to sections of the bund wall to maintain integrity and compliance.
  • Containment Improvements – Installation of a new bund lining system and GRP floor grating to enhance durability and operational safety.
  • Civils and external works providing pavement drainage and safe access to meet environmental requirements

Project Outcome:

Through careful coordination with Morrison Energy Services and adherence to the requirements of the National Grid framework, Morson Praxis delivered a robust civil and structural design solution to support the safe replacement of critical substation equipment. The works improved the condition and resilience of the infrastructure while ensuring minimal disruption during the transformer changeover.

The Nottingham office opened in February 2025 to support the growth of our new Power Civils team. Over the past year, the team has expanded significantly, creating new opportunities to work with key clients across the power sector while also supporting the wider Morson Group.

Our Director of Civil and Structural Engineer, Tim Leach, commented:

“Opening our Nottingham office a year ago marked an important step in reinforcing our Power Civils capability. Since then, the team has successfully delivered a number of projects, secured key clients within the power sector, and forged strong relationships that are already generating repeat opportunities.

Our dedicated team has doubled in numbers since the office was opened and continues to expand, bolstered through integration with our existing teams. This growth reflects both the increasing demand we are seeing and the strength of the expertise we have brought together.

With a healthy pipeline of work ahead, we are excited about the opportunity to continue supporting clients across the UK and to build even more successful partnerships in the years to come.

We are always open to conversations with organisations looking for a trusted delivery partner in the power sector, and if you are seeking an opportunity to join a growing team in this exciting sector, please get in touch.”
