YMD Boon is a well-established, multi-disciplinary practice providing architectural, building surveying and health and safety services to public and private sector clients across Schools, Further & Higher Education, Blue Light, Residential, Leisure, Commercial, Healthcare, Retail and Rail sectors.

Trading since 1968, our evolving team now operate in three offices across the Midlands, based in Nottingham, Market Harborough, Birmingham and Lincoln.

YMD Boon was formed by the merger of John Boon and Partners and YMD Architecture. The merger of the established practices took place in 2006. At the time of merger, the two partnerships had been successfully working together on projects for over 5 years combining their skills to meet the clients’ needs and improve service provision. The merger brought together over 50 years of experience under one roof.

YMD Boon are on numerous established frameworks such as ESPO, EverythingFM, Bloom, University of Nottingham, Achilles UVDB, University of Leicester, and University of Cambridge. To be accepted onto these frameworks, we have been subject to thorough professional due diligence.

Architecture – We offer a full range of architectural services, from master planning through to technical drawings, BIM and full project management. We consider factors such as sustainability, energy use, materials and transport in the early stages of the design process, all in line with available funding. We ensure these are integrated to help our clients to meet their environmental agenda.

CDM Advisor - Our dedicated CDM Advisor works closely with our team to ensure H&S risks are identified and addressed from the outset. Our CDM Advisor offers well-informed advice, training and assistance on construction design processes, risk mitigation, best practice H&S application and current legislation, at each stage of our client’s project lifecycle.

Principal Designer - We have professional staff trained to undertake the role of Principal Designer, and all Design staff are trained to fulfil their duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations. Our Principal Designers are responsible for planning, managing and monitoring the co-ordination of the health and safety aspects of the design through the pre-construction phase of a project.

Building Surveying - Our Building Surveyors work on the design and development of new buildings as well as the refurbishment, repair and maintenance of existing ones, including the conservation of historic, listed buildings. The nature of our work ranges from project delivery, building consultancy, strategic planning and funding support.

Clerk of Works - We have extensive experience providing Clerk of Works services on projects delivered using JCT Standard Forms of Contract. We monitor the works to ensure that the design and quality requirements are met to minimise abortive works and potential defects. We ensure that the constructed building complies with current statutory regulations, British Standards and the contract specification.

Health & Safety Consultancy - Our Chartered Health & Safety Consultants have a proven track record of supporting and advising clients to raise Health and Safety standards, whilst enabling them to continue their day-to-day operations. Services include Management Audits and Gap Analysis, Competent Person Service, CPD-accredited training courses, Fire Risk Assessments and more.

We were appointed by Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue to design and deliver a new Joint HQ and remodel and upgrade their existing accommodation at their headquarter site in Sherwood.

The three-storey, steel frame building features a mixture of masonry and cladding and contains open plan offices, a training centre, conference rooms, a new multi-agency strategic and tactical control room, a multi-purpose hall designed to Sport England standards, a gymnasium and canteen. Other key developments include the installation of an outdoor exercise trail for staff.

Additionally, we have refurbished the existing accommodation to include new interview rooms, an open plan office, IT space, classrooms, server rooms and ICT rooms. We also redeveloped the site to include parking capacity for 940 spaces, re-configured the road network to improve vehicle movement and security on site and removed trees and buildings where no longer required to improve the landscape.

The new HQ was a vital next step in the collaboration between Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue and Nottinghamshire Police to provide a more efficient modern working environment, with cutting edge facilities and technologies that will support the services, enabling them to better serve the public and save money.

YMD Boon were appointed to provide architectural services to design and deliver a new two-storey leisure centre in Bingham, Nottinghamshire.

The 5,500 square metre development, known as Bingham Arena, includes a 25m competition pool with 330 spectator seating. The facility also includes a 13 x 7-metre learning pool, a café, two exercise studios, a spin studio, a fitness gym and changing room facilities, as well as car parking for 207 people with 12 additional accessible spaces.

The facility is 78% more efficient in terms of carbon emissions than other leisure centres in the borough.

The leisure centre houses an innovative 25m Myrtha Pool, which utilises a steel-frame rather than a traditional concrete solution. This design feature alone reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 45%.

The White Hills Park Trust is a Multi-Academy Trust based in Nottinghamshire. Over the past couple of years we have supported White Hills Park Trust with their CIF bid applications and managed the condition works thereafter.

In the early stages we worked with the Trust to understand their needs, aspirations and identify potential building condition issues that would be supported by the CIF funding stream. Once this was agreed, we assisted the individual schools in preparing all the documentation for the CIF Bid application.

Since 2022, YMD Boon have successfully secured over £10m of funding for the Trust. This enabled us to carry out new roofing and panelling projects, new heating and boiler replacements, major windows and door replacements and many other condition projects.
