Thoresby Vale Primary Academy, located on the edge of Sherwood Forest in Edwinstowe, embodies the Scandinavian forest school philosophy where education is rooted in play, exploration, and a deep connection with nature. Designed as a bespoke one-form entry ‘plus’ primary school for 210 pupils, the scheme integrates learning spaces both indoors and outdoors, fostering creativity and environmental awareness. The school is composed of four pavilions, including administration, hall, kitchen, and teaching blocks, linked by landscaped outdoor learning areas and complemented by a full-size U11 football pitch and play spaces.
The design anticipates future expansion to a two-form entry (420 places), with oversized shared facilities and pre-installed infrastructure to simplify growth. Sustainable features include air source heat pumps, natural ventilation, photovoltaic-ready roof pitches, and passive daylighting strategies. Externally, slate rain cladding and cedar timber façades blend harmoniously with the forest setting.
Environmental stewardship is central to the project, with tree protection, wildlife management, and remediation of the brownfield site integral to its delivery. Developed in partnership between Diverse Academies Trust, Harworth Group, Nottinghamshire County Council, and the Department for Education. Designed by Lungfish, Thoresby Vale Primary Academy provides a model for sustainable, nature-inspired education that supports both community and ecological regeneration.
The Bluebell Ward at Walton Hospital, Chesterfield, is a transformative refurbishment project that marks a major advancement in inpatient mental healthcare for older adults. Commissioned by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust under the Government’s Making Room for Dignity programme, the scheme replaces outdated dormitory-style accommodation with 12 modern, private en-suite rooms. This upgrade delivers safer, more dignified, and therapeutic spaces that reflect a national commitment to improving the quality and humanity of mental health facilities.
Procured through the PPF Framework, the project benefited from a highly collaborative approach between the Trust, project managers Edge, CTD Architects, and the construction team, ensuring cost efficiency, quality, and timely delivery. Early engagement enabled the development of a robust cost plan balancing best value with design excellence, while regular stakeholder communication and on-site engagement maintained transparency throughout the 35-week programme.
Technically, the project required meticulous planning to transform a vacant ward into a fully compliant, patient-centred environment. The upgraded facility features enhanced safety measures, improved accessibility, and a calm, restorative atmosphere tailored to the needs of older adults.
As part of Derbyshire’s £150 million Making Room for Dignity investment, Bluebell Ward exemplifies how sensitive, well-executed design can elevate mental healthcare standards and patient wellbeing.

Designed by Lungfish Architects, with construction works by Stepnell, the two-form entry school will provide 420 places. The new school demonstrates Harworth’s commitment, as part of the Harworth Way, to working with local authorities and other partners to create sustainable communities, with this facility set to benefit more than 1,000 residents soon to be living on the new residential development and those living in the wider area too.
The school has been built to a bespoke design based on forest school principles. Originating in Scandinavia, the forest school approach promotes education through play and activity while nurturing creativity through self-activity and investigation. To facilitate this, the school design consists of six single storey buildings, designed as a series of pavilions, which include teaching space as well as the school’s hall, kitchen, administration facilities and early years accommodation, all linked by way of a cloister. The teaching pavilions are organised around groups of four classrooms, offering much sought-after flexible teaching opportunities through a range of teaching spaces, such as group rooms and shared learning spaces.
The classroom spaces have been designed to ensure they are dynamic, naturally lit and naturally ventilated. The school will generate approximately 10% of its own electrical requirements through a roof-mounted solar PV panel system and will use air-source heat pumps to meet its heating requirements. The buildings are intended to complement the largely residential nature of the site, with a contemporary and unique feel that also reflects the National Forest setting.
