Henry Brothers – Altogether Stronger

Our History

The story of Henry Brothers first began in 1976 when Jim Henry set up a small construction business called H&K construction, focusing on small-scale construction projects in Northern Ireland. Trading under this name for 10 years, in 1986 the business became known as Henry Brothers. As it continued to flourish, several acquisitions followed during the 1990s, and Henry Brothers - along with the acquired businesses - became part of the wider Henry Group.

Henry Brothers is now recognised as a leading construction company with offices in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, a turnover approaching £100m and over 200 direct employees. The Henry Group, meanwhile, comprises a number of manufacturing & construction sector companies, ranging from external construction through to interiors fit-out.

Company expansion

In 2015, the Midlands office of Henry Brothers was established in Nottingham. The Midlands team delivers projects up to £30m in value, working in partnership with clients across a range of sectors including education, defence, blue-light, health, custodial and commercial. It offers a personable, lean and flexible approach that sets it apart from its competitors.

Due to a reputation for high quality and complete customer satisfaction, the Midlands business has expanded across the country and in September 2022, a Northern office was opened in Central Manchester, with the business later being renamed as Henry Brothers Construction Ltd. Henry Brothers Construction has gone from strength to strength, with a turnover now approaching £50m.

Henry Brothers has been appointed to a range of well-established national and regional public sector frameworks including Crown Commercial Service, Ministry of Justice, Pagabo, Procure 23, Department for Education and North West Construction Hub, opening up further opportunities.

Our Mission & Values

Our ethos has always been to work hard and get the job done. Our practical approach ensures integrity, reliability, quality, innovation and sustainability for all our partners and in all we do. These values were in the DNA of the organisation when it was first established and are still very much evident throughout the business today.

Our Projects

We take enormous pride in our work because when we take on a project, we see it as an opportunity to deliver something inspiring that will benefit the community and the environment, long into the future. Our current project with Twycross Zoo to build a £25m Global Conservation Centre is the epitome of this, as we're delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will make a game-changing contribution to the fight against global extinction for endangered wildlife.

We look for opportunities where we can add value and offer something different to our clients, this approach has led to us developing a specialism in complex schemes such as high security Ministry of Defence and bluelight projects, heavily serviced laboratory developments and exemplar sustainable schemes. We are proud that many of our projects are secured through repeat business.

Here is a selection of projects delivered by Henry Brothers.

Our commitment to quality, sustainability, and social value on each of our projects has led to success in a raft of awards.

Sustainable Development

Henry Brothers is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and to achieve 100% by 2050 in line with Government requirements. A ‘Journey to Net Zero Strategy’ has been produced as a guidance document to outline our action plan to achieve Net Zero targets. This long-term strategic plan focuses on elimination of emissions as a priority; and to only offset once we have exhausted all other avenues.

At a project level, the Midlands team has vast experience of highly sustainable projects, including the successful delivery of an award-winning Net Zero Carbon Nursery for Staffordshire University and a Passivhaus office extension for Loughborough University, one of only a handful of certified Passivhaus offices buildings in the UK.

The Henry Brothers approach to sustainable development encompasses a number of initiatives to encourage positive health and wellbeing amongst staff and enhance community engagement. In 2024, Henry Brothers was honoured with a King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development, it was praised for its exemplary approach which resulted in significant benefits for the business, the environment and the wider construction sector.

Henry Brothers ongoing commitment to responsible business is evident in our recent sponsorship of Switch Up in Nottingham.

Founded by Marcellus Baz, Switch Up uses tried and tested mentoring techniques as well as physical training to provide life-changing support to vulnerable young people from Nottingham. This three-year partnership will provide the charity with much-needed funding to continue its positive employability programme as well as offering invaluable work placement opportunities to deliver long-term impact for the city’s disadvantaged young people.

Sustainable practices have been at the heart of Henry Brothers operations since the company began, it’s within the culture of the organisation to minimise environmental impact while maximising positive social and business outcomes.
