Willmott Dixon - The time for change is now – it’s time to decarbonise

Climate change is real, and our response will determine our future business success which is why, in 2020, we launched our 2030 Sustainability Strategy, 'Now or Never, Our decisive decade'. Delivering against its ambitions and targets will safeguard our ability to operate in the long term. Our new Decarbonise Today service, which was launched in October 2022, builds on our knowledge and experience and allows us to support our customers as they futureproof their own businesses.

There is an urgent need to improve and upgrade buildings of all kinds across the public and private sector, which has underpinned the need and ambitions of our Decarbonise Today service.

Through this means, we can assess customer’s net zero and decarbonisation progress to date against their outlined plans and commitments; understand their estate, develop or help deliver a decarbonisation plan, identify new funding, design a realistic capital programme, and bring an actionable plan to life:

At its core, our intention is to:

  1. Collaborate – to find the solution that works best for customers and their wider community of stakeholders.
  2. Enable – to bring in-house talent to the fore, providing expertise that can align tangible objectives and realise achievable outcomes.
  3. Action – give customers the confidence to take positive action right away, embrace the challenge, and make the right decarbonisation decisions.

We can help at any point of a decarbonisation journey. To find out how, download our brochure here.

Nottinghamshire and its journey to net-zero

Nottingham has a real opportunity to become the first carbon-neutral city in England by 2028 but only through greater collaboration, universal standards and clearer guidance, according to the panel of built environment experts we brought together in October 2022.

Our new business manager, Jenna Frudd, recently took part in an Insider Media panel discussion focusing on development opportunities in Nottingham alongside representatives from Conygar and Turner & Townsend. In the blog link below, she reflects on the content of the discussion, including the huge benefits behind this ambitious target.

Unlocking opportunities to provide greater value

Development programmes increasingly need more innovative use of land and assets, with public and private collaboration key.

To unlock opportunities and start building quickly, our Development Solutions team bring the best in construction and development specialism under one roof, working on projects from inception through to post-completion, and are experts in putting together applications for funding.

Also, through our positions on the Scape National Major Works, Scape Venture, Pagabo Developer Led Framework, and Procurement Hub frameworks, we can accelerate decarbonisation and new build project requirements through a fast, prequalified and socially responsible contracting mechanism.

On a mission to simplify sustainability

We're here to help customers make informed decisions regarding sustainability in the built environment

As we all take our different paths towards net zero, there are both challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We’re being inundated with facts, figures and statistics, but the true value lies in collaboration and learning from each other.

We’re all on slightly different journeys, but we all have the same goal: meet the Government’s net zero targets by 2050 (at the latest!).

At Willmott Dixon, we’re on a mission to #SimplifySustainability in the construction industry. We know that not everyone needs to be a sustainability expert, but that we can all learn from experts, share our experiences and feel empowered to make decisions.

Throughout 2022 and 2023 we are creating lots of content to help everyone to understand sustainability that little bit more. Click here to find out more.

We also have a sister company – Willmott Dixon Interiors – and work together through joint ventures on construction and fit-out projects, as well as heritage renovations.

Willmott Dixon

Willmott Dixon is a privately-owned construction and interior fit-out company, and our Chief Executive, Rick Willmott, is the fifth generation to lead the business. Sustainability and social value is at the heart of the business and since 1852 they have been passionate about leaving the right sort of social, environmental and economic legacy.

They’re pleased to be ProCon Patrons and look forward to continuing to work closely with customers in Nottinghamshire, developing places that give businesses, communities and people opportunities to grow, thrive and be inspired.

In 2022 Willmott Dixon launched its Decarbonise Today service, which provides additional skills, resources and expertise to help public sector organisations bid for Government funding to make properties more energy efficient, as well as accelerating the process through upgrade work and post-completion analysis of energy performance. It’s part of their Now or Never strategy to be zero-carbon in their own operations without offsetting by 2030, and this includes assisting customers in achieving the same in their operations.

As a major contractor, they work on projects across a variety of sectors including residential, education, law and order, science and technology, commercial, and healthcare. Their recently completed projects in the local area include the Nottinghamshire Police Custody Suite, Bingham Arena and Enterprise Centre and the Broadmarsh demolition.

In 2022 they shone a light on construction as a great industry to work in by coming first in the Big Company category of the Best Companies Awards that recognises the UK’s top workplaces.

Although a national business, their local approach gives customers close attention, instead of being one of many in a large national structure. This is also demonstrated in their local pound approach of working with local companies, where possible, with up to 60 per cent of a project’s spending distributed within 35 miles.
