Midlands contractor, G F Tomlinson, has successfully developed the University of Nottingham’s new Clinical Training Centre (CTC), delivering a cutting-edge facility that will provide immersive teaching environments for the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Located within the existing Pharmacy and Psychology building on Science Road at the University Park Campus, the 3,100 sq. m transformation has created a purpose-built medical training facility featuring advanced simulation and teaching spaces to support the University’s School of Medicine.

The completed Clinical Training Centre includes seven training suites, a simulated operating theatre, four clinical skills training spaces, five classrooms, alongside dedicated staff and student welfare areas, social spaces, offices and meeting rooms.

The facility will provide students with realistic clinical learning environments, helping to develop the practical skills and confidence required for modern healthcare practice.

The project represents another successful milestone in G F Tomlinson’s longstanding relationship with the University of Nottingham, building on more than two decades of collaboration across its campuses. Previous projects include the Biodiscovery Institute, Central Building refurbishment and the Hybrid Propulsion Systems Building, with G F Tomlinson continuing to support the University's investment in world-class teaching and research facilities.

Delivered in collaboration with AECOM as project manager, AHR Architects as lead designer, and Waterman Structures Ltd providing civil, structural and geotechnical engineering services, the scheme involved the complete remodelling of Level C and the creation of a new feature reception, alongside the replacement of the building's original Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) roof.

One of the project's most technically challenging elements was the phased replacement of the roof while the lower floors remained occupied and operational throughout construction. Using a rolling scaffold roof structure and carefully planned construction programme, G F Tomlinson successfully minimised disruption to students and staff throughout the works, while safely delivering the complex refurbishment.

Sustainability improvements have also been incorporated throughout the redevelopment, including the installation of energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, enhanced thermal performance through insulated roof and wall upgrades, and replacement of the remaining single-glazed windows with high-performance double glazing.

Alongside the construction works, G F Tomlinson delivered a programme of social value initiatives in partnership with the University, creating opportunities for student engagement through site visits, curriculum support and careers activities, helping to inspire future talent within the construction industry.

The project also delivered significant benefits to the local community and economy, with 100% of waste diverted from landfill, 98% SME business engagement and 19% of spend directed towards micro businesses. A strong focus on local supply chains and employment saw 77% of spend and 72% of labour sourced from within 20 miles of the project, alongside 15 weeks of work experience and 128 apprenticeship weeks, supporting skills development and creating valuable opportunities for the next generation of construction professionals.

Andy Sewards, Chairman at G F Tomlinson, said: “Completing the Clinical Training Centre is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in the project. Transforming an existing building into a modern, high-specification medical training facility while working within a live university environment required exceptional collaboration, careful planning and technical expertise from the entire project team.

“We're proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the University of Nottingham and to have delivered another facility that will support excellence in education, research and healthcare training for many years to come.”

Professor Jane Norman, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, said: “As a university with a strong tradition of excellence in medical education and research, we have a responsibility to help address the challenges facing healthcare and to prepare graduates who can make a real difference to patients and communities. The new Clinical Teaching Centre demonstrates our commitment to providing an outstanding learning environment where future clinicians can develop the skills, confidence and compassion to deliver the best possible care. By investing in innovative clinical education and working in partnership with the NHS, we are helping to build a healthcare workforce equipped not only to meet the needs of today, but to shape the future of health and care.”
