Redevelopment of Worksop’s Priory Centre reaches significant new phase

The redevelopment of the Priory Centre in Worksop has reached a significant new phase with the large-scale demolition now in progress.

A section of the Priory Centre, which formed part of the original Netherholme Shopping Centre and dates back to the late 1960s, will be removed so that a new building can be constructed that will host a mix of leisure, entertainment, and dining facilities.

Cllr Julie Leigh, leader of Bassetlaw District Council, visited the site to see and hear about the latest developments from main contractors G F Tomlinson.

Cllr Leigh said: “We’ve reached an exciting and significant milestone for the redevelopment of this part of the Priory Centre. People will really be able to see the progress that is being made as we begin to realise our ambition of making a lasting and positive change for Worksop Town Centre.

“We know that we need to improve the fortunes of our town centres and high streets, and this development will be a catalyst for greater opportunities and choices for people visiting Worksop.”

The demolition phase of the project began in February with internal sections of some buildings being stripped, as well as site safety hoardings being set up around the building and in the car park.

Andy Sewards, chairman at G F Tomlinson, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council to deliver this landmark regeneration scheme for Worksop. The start of structural demolition marks a significant milestone for The Priory Centre and demonstrates real progress following a detailed pre-construction period.

“Our team has worked closely with the Council and stakeholders to carefully plan the works, particularly given the logistical challenges of operating within a busy town centre environment, adjacent to live businesses and residential areas. We look forward to progressing the redevelopment and creating a vibrant new destination that will serve the community for years to come.”

Once the demolition and clearing phase has been completed, construction on a new building is expected to start in May 2026, which will host new facilities including a climbing wall, indoor adventure play area, a bowling alley and more.

Existing areas of the Priory Centre will also be refurbished with ambitions to attract further retail and leisure offers to the centre.

Stores that are currently part of the Priory Centre are open as normal.
