MORE homes are being built in Newark to meet local need thanks to a project delivered by Woodhead Group and Newark and Sherwood Homes on behalf of Newark and Sherwood District Council.

The Nottinghamshire-based companies are working together to deliver six one-bedroom flats and three two-bedroom flats on Queens Court, Lovers Lane in Newark.

This development forms part of a five-year programme of work to deliver 335 new homes across the district.

The Queens Court scheme marks the start of the second year of the partnership.

Steve Feast, director at Newark and Sherwood Homes said the recent spate of good weather had meant the development had already made excellent progress.

“Year two of the programme is already well underway and we are on time, on target and on budget to deliver a total of 50 new homes across nine sites. Every person should be able to access the housing they need and this programme creates new opportunities to transform the lives of local people,” he said.

Tom Woodhead, business services director at Woodhead Group said: “As a local company which specialises in delivering programmes of work, we’re really excited to be starting on year two of the five year partnership.

“We have welcomed an apprentice bricklayer who has been working with the site team to learn on the job which demonstrates our commitment to investing in young talent and the local community.

“This is one of nine sites which will start in year two, within the year we will deliver up to 50 new homes for local people.”

Councillor Bruce Laughton, chairman of the Homes and Communities Committee at Newark and Sherwood District Council commented: “This development is an example of where underutilised land is being transformed to deliver much needed homes for local people as part of our five year programme. It is great to see the progress being made.”

In year one Woodhead Group and Newark and Sherwood Homes delivered 70 new homes using local tradespeople and suppliers, creating six full time jobs and providing 16 people with work experience opportunities, with more than 97.88% of labour and materials sourced from within a 40 mile radius.

The programme of work has been procured through EEM, a not-for-profit procurement consortium which aims to deliver best value for the public sector.
